This estimate is educational. It is not a diagnosis, a prescribed meal plan or a calorie deficit. A pediatric clinician or registered dietitian can interpret it alongside your child’s growth pattern and health. Do not restrict a child’s intake to match an online number.
Start with a recent height and weight. Choose metric (kilograms and centimetres) or imperial (pounds and total inches) before entering them. If you switch afterwards, the values convert automatically. For a height of 4 feet 6 inches, enter 54 inches.

The tool implements the 2023 Dietary Reference Intakes Estimated Energy Requirement (EER) equations for ages 1 to under 19, as published by Health Canada. These use age, height and weight, with separate coefficients by sex and, from age 3, activity category. An age-specific allowance accounts for growth.
EER is an estimate of total daily energy needs. It is not basal metabolic rate (energy used at rest), and the calculator does not apply an adult BMR equation or a generic adult activity multiplier. Ages 1–2 use the toddler equations; ages 3–18 use the child and adolescent equations.
For a fictional 7-year-old boy who weighs 23 kg, is 122 cm tall and uses the active category:
−388.19 + (3.68 × 7) + (12.66 × 122) + (20.46 × 23) + 15 = 1,667.67 kcal/day
The calculator displays about 1,650 kcal/day after rounding to the nearest 50. Open “See the calculation used” under any result to check its inputs and growth allowance. Rounding reduces the appearance of precision; it does not make the prediction exact.
The model has four categories: inactive, low active, active and very active. These describe total daily energy expenditure relative to resting needs, not simply the number of sports sessions in a week. Consider school, play, walking, transport and training together.
Use the descriptions below only as an orientation. They are not validated tests that assign a category. If the choice is uncertain, compare the alternatives shown in your result and discuss them with a pediatric dietitian rather than treating the lowest result as a target.

The official numerical activity boundaries vary by age. The model’s labels should not be interpreted as exercise recommendations. Below age 3, the equation provides a single estimate without an activity adjustment.
A calorie is a unit of energy; food labels usually use “calories” to mean kilocalories (kcal). Your result is a model-based estimate of daily energy needed for the entered characteristics, including growth. It is not a maximum, a minimum requirement for every child, or a promise of weight maintenance.
Even when all measurements are correct, a population equation can overestimate one child’s needs and underestimate another’s. Growth, body composition, health and day-to-day activity are not captured perfectly. The National Academies explains that EER equations are not designed to set weight-loss or weight-gain goals. The activity table holds age, height and weight constant and changes only the activity assumption. It is not a recommended calorie range or a confidence interval. This tool does not force results into an age-only table: doing so would hide differences rather than validate the answer.
Use professional guidance for growth concerns, a medical condition, a prescribed diet, disordered eating concerns or unusually intensive training. Pregnancy and breastfeeding in adolescents require different equations and are outside this tool’s scope. Babies under 1 also need separate feeding guidance.
The result offers a simple mathematical example: 25% at breakfast, 30% at lunch, 30% at dinner and 15% across snacks. Those percentages are an optional illustration built into this tool, not a pediatric recommendation. They are not instructions to weigh food, require a child to finish a portion or ration snacks.
Food quality matters as well as energy. A varied pattern can include vegetables, fruit, whole grains, protein foods and appropriate dairy or alternatives. A meal need not include everything: for example, fruit with breakfast and vegetables later in the day can contribute variety across the whole day. Use the meal numbers to understand proportions, then adapt them to family routines and your child’s needs. A packed lunch, an early dinner or several smaller eating occasions may fit your day better than the example.
There is no single number for every child of the same age. This calculator uses their age and measurements with an activity assumption to generate an estimate. Read it alongside the limitations above and seek individual guidance when health or growth is a concern.
Yes, from the first birthday. The toddler equations do not use an activity category, so that field is disabled. The estimate is not a feeding prescription. Children under 1 are outside this calculator’s supported age range.
These measurements are inputs to the published pediatric equations. Adding them makes this a different calculation from a simple age-based lookup. Use recent measurements and the correct units.
The pediatric EER model used here defines four activity categories. Adding a fifth adult-style multiplier would not be the same model. See the activity guide for help interpreting the categories.
